Investing in Oklahoma’s Future:
The McMahon Foundation & the University of Oklahoma
In 1949, the McMahon Foundation made a visionary commitment that helped shape the future of journalism in Oklahoma. That year, Mrs. Louise D. McMahon established an annual $7,000 scholarship and fellowship program at the University of Oklahoma—one of the most significant private investments in journalism education at the time.
What began as a gift quickly grew into a powerful partnership. Letters from OU leadership described the scholarships as “one of the finest things that has happened to the University in years,” noting their transformative impact on students preparing for careers in journalism, government, economics, and public service. Mrs. McMahon remained actively engaged, requesting updates, student lists, and progress reports to ensure the program truly lifted young Oklahomans.11
Within months, the first McMahon Scholars were selected from schools across the state—many becoming the first in their families to attend college. Their success strengthened OU’s program, elevated local journalism, and reinforced the Foundation’s belief that education is one of the most powerful investments a community can make.
More than 75 years later, the relationship between the McMahon Foundation and the University of Oklahoma continues to thrive. Together, we remain committed to expanding opportunity, opening doors for students, and shaping a stronger future for Oklahoma.
